Jeremy Foo on stage showcasing Alpha Echo

Alpha Story just hit $1M ARR. When we officially launched 18 months ago, we were at $50K in revenue. 20x less. Here's what I learned getting from there to here.

Alpha Story at a glance:

  • Founded: 2023, Singapore
  • Founder: Jeremy Foo (8+ years in PR, previously founded Elliot & Co)
  • Revenue: $1M ARR (reached in 18 months)
  • Focus: AI-powered PR for startups and enterprises in Singapore and Southeast Asia
  • Products: Alpha Echo (media monitoring + threat detection), Alpha Marketplace (PR execution)
  • Differentiator: Guaranteed media coverage, AI-driven campaign measurement

What is Alpha Story and what problem does it solve?

Alpha Story is a PR agency that runs on AI. We're based in Singapore and we work with startups and enterprises across Southeast Asia.

The reason we exist is pretty simple. PR has a broken loop. Companies pay agencies to get coverage, but nobody can really tell them what's working, what threats are forming, or whether the money actually did anything useful.

Alpha Echo is the listening side: media monitoring, sentiment tracking, threat detection. It tells brands what's being said about them before it turns into a crisis. Alpha Marketplace is the doing side: it connects brands with vetted publishers and creators to run campaigns that reach real audiences. Echo detects, Marketplace resolves. That's the whole model.

People told us agencies couldn't be replaced. They said scaling with AI would mean losing the human heart of marketing. We built anyway.

How did Alpha Story grow from $50K to $1M ARR in 18 months?

There's no clean growth curve. The first few months were messy pilots with early customers willing to bet on a new approach. Some of those pilots went sideways. The feedback was hard: our early product didn't do enough, our processes were patchy, and our pitch was too abstract for buyers who just wanted media hits.

Things changed when we stopped selling technology and started selling outcomes. Singapore's startup ecosystem moves fast. Founders don't have patience for tools that need a learning curve. They want coverage. They want to know it worked. Once we simplified to guaranteed media coverage backed by AI targeting and measurement, revenue started compounding.

The other shift was geographic. What works in Singapore doesn't automatically translate to Malaysia, Indonesia, or Vietnam. Southeast Asia's PR market is fragmented that way. Traditional agencies struggle with cross-border campaigns because they depend on local relationships in each market. Our AI layer gave us reach without needing a physical office in every city, and that turned out to matter a lot.

18 months and a lot of stubborn choices later, we crossed the line.

What did Jeremy Foo learn building an AI PR startup?

I've been in PR for over eight years. Before Alpha Story, I founded Elliot & Co, which became one of Singapore's fastest growing PR agencies. That experience taught me how the industry works. Building Alpha Story taught me where it breaks.

Three lessons that shaped how we operate:

  • Campaigns are relationships first. Data intelligence only matters if you bring the heart to it. We've seen AI-targeted pitches fall flat because the journalist relationship wasn't there. And we've seen scrappy, relationship-first campaigns outperform the data-optimized ones. If you had to pick one, pick the relationship.
  • Speed wins the moments old models miss. In PR, timing matters more than perfection. A good pitch sent on Monday beats a perfect pitch sent on Thursday. We built our workflows to move from insight to execution fast because the news cycle doesn't wait.
  • Start with messy, high stakes pilots. Our best client relationships started with the hardest problems, where the brief was unclear, the timeline was tight, and the stakes were real. Solving those earned trust that no sales deck could.

None of this was obvious before we lived it. I wrote about the period when I thought Alpha Story was going to die -- the early days when payroll was uncertain and the doubt was constant. That experience shaped every decision we made after.

What are the hard truths about scaling a PR tech company?

Hitting $1M ARR doesn't mean we've figured it out. It means we survived long enough to see what breaks at scale.

Tech amplifies both good and bad work. Without craft and context, machines just scale noise. We learned this the hard way. Early versions of our AI recommendations were technically accurate but editorially tone deaf. A pitch optimized for open rates that reads like spam doesn't help anyone. So every piece of AI output still gets a human editorial review. That's by design, not a temporary fix.

Growth also shows you every shortcut you took. When we went from 10 to 50 active campaigns, our project management broke, our reporting lagged, and gaps in client communication started appearing. We had to rebuild systems while running at full speed.

And differentiation is harder than it used to be. Half the agencies in Singapore claim to be "AI-powered" now. You can't just say you're different. You have to deliver different results, month after month. Originality plus operational rigor. That's the only defence I've found.

How does Alpha Story compare to traditional PR agencies in Singapore?

Singapore has established PR agencies. Affluence PR, Flame Communications, COCO PR, SYNC PR, and others have built strong reputations over many years. We respect that. Alpha Story does things differently, and the right choice depends on what a client actually needs.

Here's where the approaches diverge:

  • Most agencies run retainer models with manual media outreach. We combine AI targeting with human execution, so campaigns launch faster and publisher matching is backed by data rather than gut feel.
  • Singapore's established agencies tend to be generalists covering F&B, lifestyle, and corporate. We focus on tech startups and enterprises that want measurable outcomes, not just clippings.
  • Retainers at traditional agencies typically run $5K to $15K SGD per month. We offer campaign-based and subscription models with pricing tied directly to deliverables.
  • Most agencies work from media databases and spreadsheets. We run on our own tools: Alpha Echo for monitoring and threat detection, Alpha Marketplace for execution and measurement.
  • Most agencies can't guarantee placement. We guarantee media coverage as part of our campaign packages.

I'm not going to pretend one model is always better. But enterprise clients running multi-market campaigns who need measurable ROI tend to find our approach a better fit for how they actually operate. What's next for Alpha Story?

$1M ARR is the first line, not the finish. The PR industry still wastes people's time. There's a lot left to fix.

Singapore is still home base, but Malaysia, Indonesia, and the broader ASEAN market are where the next wave of growth comes from. We're also putting serious work into Alpha Echo's threat detection capabilities for enterprise clients who can't afford to be reactive.

For anyone told "you can't," keep building. We can't wait for the rest of Asia to see what we're working on.
